1. Intelligent Verbatim transcription (standard)

Intelligent Verbatim transcription – recordings are transcribed word for word (verbatim), exactly how speech is heard on the recording but there are minor edits to make the transcript “cleaner”.  The aim is to produce a transcript which is accurate and true to the original recording but also a transcript which is easy to read.  Filler words from interviewers/moderators, habitual irrelevant phrases and irrelevant exact repetitions which distract from the main content of the interview are usually omitted.

2. Verbatim transcription

Verbatim transcription is exactly that – recordings are transcribed word for word (verbatim), exactly how speech is heard on the recording.  Absolutely nothing is omitted from these transcripts except for the following filler words, if they are irrelevant to the context, “er”, “um”, “ah”, “erm” and “uh” and stutters over a word e.g “I saw he was de, de, de, de, de, devastated by it.”

3. Polished transcription

Polished transcription is an intelligent verbatim transcription but “tidied up” even further.  The aim is to produce a transcript which is accurate and true to the original recording but also a transcript which is easy to read.  Filler words, habitual irrelevant phrases and irrelevant exact repetitions which distract from the main content of the audio are usually omitted.  False starts and changes of tack can be omitted where the transcripts makes sense to omit them.  Sentences will be rounded off by each speaker before noting interruptions by other speakers rather than transcribing these as they occur.  Obvious mistakes, which are 100% incorrect, can have [sic] noted after it or corrected.
